NYT: Olbermann to join … Al Gore’s Current TV

Unconfirmed thus far, but the Times hears buzz. Two words: “equity stake.”

One of the people with knowledge of the plans said Mr. Olbermann would have an equity stake in Current TV. The people insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized by their employers to comment in advance of the official announcement…

Current TV has set up a presentation with advertisers for Wednesday afternoon in Manhattan to announce its future plans. The channel may be betting on Mr. Olbermann to put it on the cable map. The low-rated five-year-old channel needs the help. Targeting young people, it originally subsisted on YouTube-style submissions and video journalists. More recently it started producing and acquiring traditional television series, like repeats of “This American Life.”…

A move to Current TV would challenge Mr. Olbermann’s fans of his MSNBC show — where he drew about a million viewers a night — to follow him to a channel that is considerably less accessible. Current TV is available in only about 60 million homes, and is usually available only on the digital tier of cable television systems, which requires a separate receiver. MSNBC, which is owned by NBC Universal, is available in 85 million homes and is almost always available as a basic cable entry…

With Current TV, Mr. Olbermann would also gain a measure of independence. Unlike most cable channels, including MSNBC, which are owned by large media companies, Current is privately and independently owned by Mr. Gore and other backers.

Why would Olby settle for a rinky-dink operation like Current after being MSNBC’s 8 p.m. go-to guy for years on end? Could be that they outbid for him, but a big payday seems unlikely considering that the network was struggling so badly last year that it had to remake its whole operation. (Besides, who else would be bidding? CNN?) The key, I’d bet, is the equity provision, i.e. control. MSNBC’s overall leftward tilt was partly Olbermann’s doing; presumably he’ll have an even bigger influence over the programming at the “new” Current TV. In fact, per the Reuters story at the last link, the early buzz about Current when Gore got involved in 2004 was that it would be a left-wing alternative to Fox News. Having tried and semi-succeeded to build precisely that at MSNBC, Olby may be thinking of this as a second shot but with even greater leverage. Plus, if even one-tenth of the stories are true about what it’s like to work with him, he’ll need some equity to ensure that he doesn’t eventually get shoved out here too.

Olbermann Said to Be Going to Current TV

Keith Olbermann, the former top-rated host of “Countdown” on the news channel MSNBC, will announce his next television home on Tuesday, and people familiar with his plans pointed Monday to a possible deal with the public affairs channel Current TV.

Neither Mr. Olbermann, his representatives, or executives from Current TV would comment on the move, but they did not deny that the channel, which counts former Vice President Al Gore as one of its founders, will become at least one partner in Mr. Olbermann’s future media plans.

One of the people with knowledge of the plans said Mr. Olbermann would have an equity stake in Current TV. The people insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized by their employers to comment in advance of the official announcement.

On Monday a public relations agency hired by Mr. Olbermann scheduled a Tuesday morning conference call for an announcement about his next job. “He and his new partners will make an exciting announcement regarding the next chapter in his remarkable career,” the agency wrote in an e-mail.

More recently it started producing and acquiring traditional television series, like repeats of “This American Life.”

Volkswagen Darth Vader Super Bowl Commercial

This is another commercial that was just too cute to pass up. Is it destined to be the top 2011 Super Bowl commercial? Maybe not but the 30-second spot featuring Volkswagen and little Darth Vader is definitely a crowd-pleaser.

Max Page is the 6-year-old who plays Darth Vader in Volkswagen's Super Bowl commercial, which has been streamed more than 15 million times.

Page removed his mask on the Today show Monday morning with his mom, Jennifer, who explained that he first auditioned for the ad on Dec. 29, and was eventually chosen after several callbacks.

"It wasn't until halfway through filming that we found out it was a Super Bowl commercial. We were just thrilled," she says. "We just thought it was his first national commercial. I was like, 'whoa, this is out of this world.'

Page -- who has also appeared in spots for Walgreens and Clear Channel -- admits he's never seen Star Wars, but looked up a photo of Darth Vader online. He also acts on The Young and the Restless.

"I can't even keep up with the messages and the calls," says Jennifer. "It's just overwhelming. The first night, [online views] were at 60,000. I went to bed and the next morning it was at 1 million. My mind couldn't comprehend!"

Page also reveals he was born with a congenital heart defect, but is doing well after having a pacemaker put in when he was three months old.

Will HTC Arrive for Sprint be the ‘Industry’s First’ 4G WiMax Windows Phone 7 Device?

Sprint is scheduled to have a New York City unveiling of what the company calls an ‘industry first’ later today, which we’re assuming to be a smartphone as the U.S.-based CDMA and 4G WiMax carrier is making a big deal in its press invitation. The announcement is slated to bring in a Kyocera handset called the Echo, a device that we had previously reported as a trademark filing was discovered.

However, Engadget is also reporting that the carrier is slated to bring a Windows Phone 7 handset to its New York event by the name of the HTC Arrive. Given that Sprint’s been aggressively pushing its 4G WiMax network recently, we’re guessing that the ‘industry first’ here is that the HTC Arrive will be the first 4G Windows Phone 7 handset. Microsoft had previously limited Windows Phone 7 to GSM networks for the platform’s initial launch, making initial batches of the device 3G-compatible for AT&T and T-Mobile. A 4G/3G hybrid Windows Phone 7 handset for Sprint will give the carrier somewhat of a marketing edge against its rivals, both of which have had Windows Phone 7 smartphones in their lineup for some time now. Moreover, given Sprint’s push for tethering on Android handsets for an optional subscription premium, our speculation for a 4G WiMax Windows Phone 7 HTC Arrive could potentially come with tethering capabilities, which would be another industry first as prior Windows Phone 7 handsets lacked the ability to tether.

Whatever Sprint announces, we’ll be sure to hear more tonight.

Sprint to get HTC Arrive, Kyocera Echo smartphones?

Two new previously unheard of handsets are coming to Sprint, according to a Monday Engadget report. Other than the logos and names for the two, the HTC Arrive and Kyocera Echo, not much else is currently known. The HTC model is said to be powered by Windows Phone 7, however, and a trademark registration at the USPTO confirms the upcoming availability of this phone; it may be the name for the 7 Pro slider.

The Kyocera Echo, meanwhile, may be a rebadged version of the Sanyo Orange, though no technical specs on this device are freely available either. This phone, like the Kyocera Zio that's available at Sprint under the Sanyo brand name, may run on Android.

Dual-Screen Android [Ultimate Multi-Tasking] Sprint’s Kyocera Echo

We knew Sprint had something special up their sleeves in conjunction with Kyocera – and early reports confirmed its name would be the Echo – but details were and still are scarce. According to new updates by Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, however, the device will indeed be an industry first.

The Kyocera Echo will be the first dual-screen Android handset. As the Wall Street Journal describes it:

Sprint Nextel Corp. plans to unveil a smartphone late Monday that includes a twin set of touch screens that give the device a pseudo-tablet design, according to a person familiar with the device.

The device, called the Echo and made by Kyocera Corp. of Japan, features two 3.5-inch touch screens that can be stacked side by side.

It also houses a pivot hinge that allows one screen to be tucked beneath the other. I’m having trouble imagining this in practice, so I guess I’ll just have to wait until tonight to see just what Sprint and Kyocera have done. WSJ says users will be able to multi-task while both displays are in play.

Some use cases they provided were obvious: you could drag widgets or icons from one screen to another, or simply carry out multiple tasks at the same time. Imagine running Twitter on one side while you browse the web on another. It does kind of get me excited, regardless of the manufacturer.

That’s only me dreaming at this point, though. We don’t know just how flexible this device will be (software-wise, not hardware-wise), so we’ll be looking forward to the unveiling later on tonight in New York. [Image courtesy of Engadget. Not indicative of the Kyocera Echo's design.]

Sprint Kyocera Echo dual-touchscreen Android phone tipped for imminent reveal

Sprint is expected to launch a dual-touchscreen smartphone made by Kyocera later today, pairing two 3.5-inch touchscreens and running Android. According to the WSJ, the Sprint Kyocera Echo has what’s described as a “pivot hinge” – presumably a double-hinged arrangement – which allows one screen to fold back against the other out of the way. We’re imagining something similar to Fujitsu’s prototype, shown here.

According to the source, “users can accomplish multiple tasks on the two screens, or drag items from one screen to the other.” This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a dual-display Sprint device; leaks back in mid-January suggested the same thing, though the exact nature of the functionality is still unclear. Android Community will be at the Sprint event in a few hours time, so we’ll have all the details as they’re announced.

Sprint expected to introduce Kyocera Echo at event later today, HTC Arrive also indirectly corroborated

Businessweek has managed to track down an insider with information on the plans of both Sprint and Kyocera, and he (or she) has been talkative enough to confirm that a Kyocera Echo is all set for launch on the Now Network at an event later today. Sprint's tagline for said event was that it'll deliver an "industry first" that makes us believe "the impossible is possible," and with all due respect to Kyocera, neither of those really sounds like the company's upcoming Android handset. The first time we got wind of the Echo, however, it was accompanied by a tip about a Windows Phone 7-based HTC Arrive, a more likely candidate for that industrial innovation prize -- there are no CDMA WP7 devices quite yet. We could imagine the Arrive being a carrier-specific brand name for HTC's 7 Pro, which is already expected on Sprint and has even cleared the FCC in a CDMA flavor. But again, that doesn't fully satisfy the bluster about the impossible becoming possible, so maybe Sprint will have even more to show us -- we'll be attending its shindig tonight to make absolutely sure.

Top Super Bowl commercials 2011: Darth Vader rules

Last night's game between the Packers and Steelers was a classic, with lots of subplots, but there was plenty of competition for the top Super Bowl commercials. Bud Light, as usual, provided some fun with the "product placement" spot, and the Doritos house sitter ad was good, too.

But my winner is the VW ad featuring a little kid dressed up as Darth Vader. It perfectly captures every kid's dream for world domination -- yet does it in a charming way. I though the ad was hilarious; my wife described it as cute. Either way, it's #1 on my list this year. (Added points for actually being effective in making you recall the product.)

Joan Rivers Reams Christina Aguilera Over Star-Mangled Banner

EXCLUSIVE: Christina Aguilera has pipes of steel, but her memory failed her on Super Bowl Sunday when she flubbed the ramparts out of the Star-Spangled Banner. With great gaffes come great amounts of criticism, and although the singer has tried to explain herself ("I lost my place"), she couldn't escape the wrath of Joan Rivers.

"How stupid can you get?" Joan asked when I talked to her on Monday. "Christina must have been thinking about food, that's why she forgot the words."

Before the big game, Christina belted out "What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last reaming" instead of "O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming." It was the second time she sang the "What so proudly" line, but before she used the word "gleaming" instead of "reaming."

The 'Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?' star continued using Christina's oft-fluctuating weight to rough up Christina, and offered a line she thought she could have used, "O say can you see ... french fries." Joan snarked that there was an upside to Christina's fluctuating weight. "She's gotten so big," -- here's where you say how big is she? -- "She looks like she could eat Lady Gaga. Great way to get rid of competition."

After 'The Star-Spangled Banner' wrapped, Aguilera headed backstage where a source told me that the singer was "devastated" by her mistake.

Texas-sized letdown as comeback falls short

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The stage was set for another dramatic comeback, another long, final drive to win a Super Bowl, another game for the ages to go with so many others the Steelers have created around their well-stocked trophy case.

Ben Roethlisberger and his offense took the field with two minutes to go, trailing by six, to try to duplicate what they accomplished two years ago in Tampa, Fla.. Only this time, the Green Bay Packers pulled the rug out from under their glass slippers, and there was no pot of gold awaiting them at the other end of the field.

That final drive never got on track and died far from where it needed to go as the Green Bay Packers claimed their fourth Super Bowl, 31-25, Sunday night.

Talk of a second pro football dynasty in Pittsburgh was snuffed out as the Steelers lost the Super Bowl for only the second time. They have won a record six.
PG VIDEO: STEELERS REPORT
PG VIDEO: PLAYER INTERVIEWS

Three killer turnovers proved too much to overcome as a furious comeback by the Steelers fell short. Their offense was dynamic at times, but those mistakes led to 21 Green Bay points.

"Twenty-one points? That's the difference in this ballgame," Hines Ward said.

The Packers did not lose the ball once.

"We were unable to get any turnovers on defense," Steelers safety Troy Polamalu said. "That was the difference. They made plays on defense and we didn't."

Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes, two to Greg Jennings. Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdown passes, but he also threw two interceptions, one returned for a 37-yard touchdown by safety Nick Collins.

"I feel like I let the City of Pittsburgh down, the fans, my coaches and teammates," Roethlisberger said. "It's not a good feeling."

The Steelers came back from deficits of 21-3 in the second quarter and 28-17 in the fourth quarter to trail, 28-25, with 7:34 left. A 23-yard field goal by Green Bay's Mason Crosby put the Packers ahead by six with 2:07 left to put the ball back in the Steelers' court and into the hands of a quarterback who has triumphed so many times in such circumstances.

Roethlisberger and his offense had another chance to pull out a second Super Bowl in three seasons with one, final drive starting from their 13 after the kickoff -- eerily similar to their comeback victory against Arizona two years ago.

"Whenever there's time on the clock and we're within a one-score game, I feel pretty confident that we're capable of doing the job," coach Mike Tomlin said.

This time, it was not to be. After a 5-yard pass completion to Ward, Roethlisberger threw three incomplete passes toward Mike Wallace, and the Packers took over with 49 seconds left and ran out the clock.

Go Daddy Sees Anticipated Traffic, Sales Spike from Super Bowl Ad

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting and domain giant Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) announced on Monday that it had doubled its best-ever Internet traffic spike in the wake of its advertisement in Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast, and had successfully converted the traffic into significant sales.

The company, which owes much of its rapid rise to prominence to a deft spinning of the controversy surrounding its original Super Bowl ad, says the surge that followed its first appearance in the broadcast pushed its total domains under management past the 46 million mark.

"We scored several Go Daddy Super Bowl records," said Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons, in a statement. "Our fourth-quarter commercial spiked our Internet traffic higher than any Super Bowl ad we've ever done… In fewer than 15 minutes after Go Daddy's first Super Bowl commercial aired, our domain name registrations shot up more than 466 percent over last year."

The company’s first-quarter ad marked the unveiling of a new “Go Daddy girl,” the reveal of which had been teased for several weeks by the company, in the lead-up to the game. The mystery woman turned out to be comic Joan Rivers, with a digitally assisted “smoking hot” body – apparently as a way of suggesting that “anything is possible” with a .co domain.

Part of the purpose for the ad, said the company, was to showcase the recently-launched .co TLD, helping to give exposure to a product that is available at Go Daddy. But, as Go Daddy has pointed out, there’s a fairly obvious potential benefit to anybody selling .co domains to the product being put on that kind of stage.

"It's a memorable, meaningful Web address that opens up millions of new, creative branding opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses on the Internet," says Juan Diego Calle, CEO and founder of .CO Internet SAS, quoted in the Go Daddy press release. "This ad is working for us already. Almost immediately, we recorded a huge uptick in .CO domain name registrations."

Packers Beat Steelers 31-25:Super Bowl Score By Quarter

The Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 to become Super Bowl champions. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 304 yards and three touchdown to become the Super Bowl MVP.

Green Bay dominated the first quarter by going up 14-0 after Nick Collins' interception return for a touchdown.

Pittsburgh finally got on the board in the second quarter. Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham kicked a field goal and Hines Ward caught a touchdown pass. But Green Bay's Greg Jennings also scored, making the score 21-10 at the end of the half.

Pittsburgh's Rashard Mendenhall scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, cutting Green Bay's lead to 21-17.

The Packers wouldn't be stopped in the fourth, scoring on an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jennings and kicking a late field goal.
