The Song of Volkswagen 'Black Betty' Commercial

Black Betty,' Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

Taking a stab at the Ram Jam classic, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's cover of 'Black Betty' was snatched by Volkswagen for their 2011 Super Bowl ad to market the new incarnation of the Beetle. In the spot, a stylized beetle-of the insect variety-races through the forest with the style and vigor of its automotive homonym. The insect races through the forest like a driver on the interstate and the ad ends with the beetle in a power slide: action that simulates many-a-car ad before it.

Unlike the much-hyped Darth Vader ad for the new VW Passat, a visual of the new Beetle car was absent in this Super Bowl ad. The ad's final frame-a silhouette-provided a tease to what the new Beetle may look like, and Volkswagen aims to stoke this anticipation by launching an all-out social media and online advertising blitz immediately following the Super Bowl. Young urban professionals of America, get ready.

As for the ad's music, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion recorded the 'Black Betty' cover for the commercial at the request of Volkswagen of America's agency Deutsch L.A. Inc. For other musical endeavors, the band has also recently released an anthology of the band called 'Dirty Shirt Rock 'N' Roll, The First Ten Years.'

Volkswagen – 2011 – Beetle

This is shaping up to be one of our favorite commercials this year. It has the excitement of a high-performance car commercial, without actual featuring any cars. The effects are amazing, the bug somehow has personality, and the tease of a new 21st-century Beetle is almost too much to resist. We may be looking at buying a new car later this year.

Steelers Beat Jets, Steelers vs Packers Super Bowl XLV

The Jets Steelers Game resulted in Pittsburgh Steelers Beating the NY Jets, so it will be Steelers vs Packers Super Bowl XLV!

The Pittsburgh Steelers held off the New York Jets, winning a 24-19 victory in the AFC Championship Game—and winning a trip to Super Bowl XLV! The Superbowl match-up will pit the NFC champions, the Green Bay Packers against AFC Champions the Pittsburgh Steelers in Arlington, Texas on Feb. 6. The biggest football game of the year will be broadcast on CBS at 6:30 pm EST.

Both Green Bay and Pittsburgh are football towns, with each team bringing a rich football history to the championship match.Green Bay Packers fans are completely loyal and devoted but demand for Green Bay Packers jerseys and gear is off the charts right now, all over the globe. According to sports website, BleacherReport, “Kate Hogan of Packers Pro Shop said they are shipping anywhere from Japan to Australia to the United Kingdom to even Iceland.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won more Super Bowl titles than any other team. The Steelers have won 6 Super Bowl titles and won 8 AFC Championship Games. The Steelers won their most recent championship, Super Bowl XLIII, on February 1, 2009.

Even if you’re not a big football fan (and I’m not) Superbowl XLV is going to be a great game!

Quote of the Day: Sarah Palin Remembers Ronald Reagan (Or Does She?) Posted by JOE GANDELMAN, Editor-In-Chief in At TMV, Politics. Feb 5th, 2011

Our political Quote of the Day comes from Doug Mataconis who looks at Sarah Palin’s comments about Ronald Reagan and concludes that yes, she remembers Ronald Reagan — but seems to be missing an essential ingredient of who he was and why his appeal was so great that even some voters not inclined to agree with him were willing to hear him out (and be moved to support him):

The Ronald Reagan I remember was an optimist who spoke of America as being the “shining city on the hill,” and who, even if in the depths of the Carter Malaise believed that the country’s best days were ahead of it, a sentiment that appeared throughout his major campaign speeches in 1980. One of the reasons Ronald Reagan was successful was because he brought that message of optimism at a time when the American public was becoming increasingly pessimistic.

Modern-day conservative rhetoric, especially as practiced by the Palin’s and Glenn Beck’s of the world, seems to have thrown that Reagan optimism overboard in favor of a philosophy that seems to find enemies around every corner, and conspiracies behind every event. I don’t know what you call that, but it sure as heck isn’t Ronald Reagan, which just makes the efforts by such people to claim Reagan’s legacy as their own all the more pathetic, a point which was brought home with a vengeance recently thanks to comments from Reagan’s youngest son [Ron Reagan]…

Indeed, Reagan could energetically disagree with someone but didn’t paint all of his domestic foes as enemies of the United States who akin to villains in a James Bond movie, sitting around rubbing their hands as they plotted ways to end America as we know it. Reagan had an optimism and also came under fire for some off the wall comments. But his problems with language were often with accuracy versus some modern day conservatives who have a little problem with demagoguery. His optimism and willingness to engage politically without trying to whip up hatred is what made him win over the Reagan Democrats and get things done working with members of the other party. As historian Gil Troy has noted, Reagan also did plant some seeds that blossomed into modern day polarization.

But Troy has also noted that Reagan’s willingness to work with others and compromise put him in the class as (hold onto your hats conservatives) a moderate President. (Some details here..)

Super Bowl 2011 TV Time, Announcers, Odds And More

Steelers-Packers is almost here and we've been getting a lot of search referrals asking when does the Super Bowl start. So here it is right off the bat - Super Bowl 2011 kickoff time is at 6:29 p.m. (ET) on Fox. There is no official place to watch the Super Bowl online so you're on your own there if you want to find a streaming site.

Super Bowl pre-game coverage has already started on ESPN and other major networks. At some point in recent years, pre-game coverage became a 13 hour event. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are your Super Bowl XLV play-by-play announcers, while Chris Meyers and Pam Oliver broadcast from the sidelines.

The 2011 Super Bowl odds are still in the Green Bay Packers favor. The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't been favorites all week. The line has been holding steady around 3 points all week and that's about where it remains. Andrew Sharp of SB Nation has been blogging about Super Bowl prop bets all week if you're interested.

There are plenty of this year's Super Bowl commercials and ads already out there but I haven't spoiled it yet by watching any of them. If you want to catch the Super Bowl ads right after they happen, YouTube.com will be posting them immediately after they air tonight. Check out the link for that here.

As most of you already know courtesy of Joel's reports and others, this year's Super Bowl location didn't exactly work out as people had envisioned. Snow in Dallas and the surrounding areas has put a damper on the first Super Bowl game at Jerry Jones' new stadium. More snow is supposed to come today, which won't affect the game because the roof is going to be closed. But it will definitely affect people getting to and from the Super Bowl.

We've talked about predictions, recipes, Hall of Fame stuff and now I just want to get to the game. This is the last NFL football game for a long, long time. Enjoy it.

Development agenda Rethink youth

Delano Seiveright, Contributor

The front-page story of The Sunday Gleaner, January 23, titled 'Boot 'Babsy': youth leaders want portfolio shifted to education ministry', is an exaggeration, but it brings to the fore a number of issues surrounding youth development. I am certain that most Jamaicans were unaware of a 'National Youth Council' just as much as residents of Portmore are unaware of a 'Portmore Youth Council'. What many of us are aware of is the propensity for politics to slip into the halls of civil-society youth organisations. Notably, though, there should be no issue with a civil-society youth leader being involved with any political party as long as he is able to effectively separate his political views from representation of a non-partisan grouping.

SAD REALITY

A sad reality regarding discourse in Jamaica is the absence of logic and reason on far too many occasions. Discourse tends to lie heavily on emotion and 'gut feelings' rather than rationale. Youth issues discourse, over the years, tends to follow this trend. It is commonplace for discussion on youth issues to take place in isolation of critical matters including economic management, political history and justice. I have had countless experiences of youth leaders speaking glowingly on 'youth development' and an overwhelming desire to travel all over the world. The arguments tended to focus on redistributive ideas where, in essence, we must give a greater piece of a diminishing pie to the 'young people', oblivious of the extent of the economic crisis and the 'basket to carry water' reality for government ministers. Further yet promulgating the need for wealth creation, economic growth, mitigating bureaucracy, lowering and simplifying taxes and lowering interest rates are not usually issues of real concern.

MUSIC | 6th Annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute Weekend
If the legendary reggae king Bob Marley were still alive, he'd be celebrating his 66th birthday this Sunday February 6th. There's no question that celebrations (of some form) will be happening all over the city, but one of the chief parties happening is the one at Annex Wreckroom. They are actually throwing two, both in support of the Yonge St. Mission Food Bank. Tonight's performers include Blessed, the Legendary Willi Williams, Truths and Rights, Kaesun and more.
The Annex Wreckroom (794 Bathurst Street), 9:30pm $10

ILLUSTRATE | Opening Night: Sketchrieg Presents Paper Trail
Paper Trail is a collaborative comic book narrative where the comic artists and illustrators that make up the collective Sketchrieg each take a turn at illustrating a panel, not knowing what the other artist before them has drawn up for the story. What results is a graphic adventure with unexpected twists and turns that even the creators themselves are not aware of. It is being presented tonight, worth a visit! Note: This was originally scheduled for last night but has been rescheduled to tonight.
XPACE Cultural Centre (58 Ossington Avenue), 7pm

Whats the Reason of Death Tura Satana, Cult Actress

'Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!' Star Tura Satana has died.

It has been announced that actress Tura Satana died yesterday due to heart failure, according to the New York Times. Her age has been debated, some stating she was born in 1935, but her manager confirms she was 72 years old.

“A woman, like my character, was able to show the male species that we’re not helpless and not entirely dependent on them,” Satana quoted in 2008, from EW News Briefs. “People picked up on the fact that women could be gorgeous and sexy and still kick a–.”

Satana, most commonly referred to as the “cult actress,” broke through with film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! in 1965. She has been through two marriages, has two daughters and two sisters, we hear from News Gather. She is also recognized from 1963’s Irma La Douce.

Services are set to take place around Satana’s birthday, July 10, Times also added.
