NBA Trade Rumors Roundup: Gerald Wallace, Raymond Felton Could Be Up For Grabs

While we wait for the Carmelo Anthony trade rumors to come to a merciful end, the rest of the NBA attempts to gauge opportunities for deals ahead of the NBA trade deadline this Thursday at 3 PM Easter. 'Melo may or may not be headed to the New Jersey Nets or New York Knicks, and the Nets may or may not take on some Knicks in an absurd mash-up of the reported offers. Wackadoo!

There was some non-'Melo chatter out there on Monday. Here are the highlights.

* Gerald Wallace could be on the move. The Charlotte Bobcats' small forward, a strong defender and rebounder, is available, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. The Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers are among the teams interested. Houston has been reluctant to extend any of the team's own players past this season; Aaron Brooks, Shane Battier and Chuck Hayes all learned that the hard way. Wallace is on the books beyond this year, but would add a top-flight inside player to team with Luis Scola and Kevin Martin.

* If the Denver Nuggets end up with Raymond Felton in an Anthony deal, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports, they will try to flip him. Felton is an above-average point guard on a short contract that only runs through next season. There should be a plethora of buyers if the Nuggets get him and look to trade him.

* Who's the most likely to be traded Phoenix Sun? That'd be Mickael Pietrus, according to Seth Pollack of SB Nation Arizona. The defender who helped the Orlando Magic get to the 2009 NBA Finals could be of interest to contending teams.

DFA: No Filipino casualties in New Zealand earthquake

MANILA, Philippines – No Filipinos were injured in the earthquake that rocked Christchurch, New Zealand today, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported.

Citing information from the Philippine Embassy in Wellington, the DFA said there are no Filipino casualties so far in the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that hit New Zealand’s second largest city.

The earthquake had a focal depth of 5 kilometers and was 10 kilometers southwest of Christchurch.

“The Embassy and the Philippine Honorary Consul in Christchurch, Zedric Peter Wait, are closely monitoring the situation at Christchurch,” the DFA said.

Christchurch is home to an estimated 2,000 Filipinos.

News reports stated damage to buildings and a city bridge made impassable. Power is currently down and telephone connections remain sporadic.

A 7.1 earthquake struck the city last September causing widespread damage but only minor injuries.

New Zealand, located between the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates, has an average of more than 14, 000 earthquakes a year, of which about 20 would normally top magnitude 5.0.

New Zealand earthquake shuts down flights out of the country

New Zealand earthquake: Air traffic control operations for New Zealand are located in Christchurch, where the air traffic control building may have been damaged by Tuesday's earthquake. All international flights from New Zealand have been suspended.

Auckland Airport spokesman Richard Llewellyn told the New Zealand Herald that the nation's entire airways system had been shut down shortly after the earthquake hit Christchurch, damaging downtown office buildings and trapping workers. TVNZ reports fatalities from two buses crushed by falling buildings.

"For the moment planes are landing but no planes are departing,'' Mr. Llewellyn told NZPA.

"The national air traffic control centre is in Christchurch, and they are checking to make sure it is all OK, and until then the airways system has been closed."

New Zealand Earthquake 2011: Magnitude 6.3 Quake Shakes Christchurch, South Island (VIDEO)

A strong earthquake shook New Zealand on Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.

The 6.3-magnitude quake, per the USGS, shook New Zealand's South Island and its largest city of Christchurch at 12:50 p.m. local time.

Scroll Down For Live Updates

The New Zealand Herald reported that the quake's epicenter was Lyttelton with a depth of 5 kilometers, though it was felt as far away as Wellington and Dunedin per Twitter reports. It shook the Canterbury region, which has a population of approximately 500,000. Radio New Zealand reports "that some people have been killed."

Radio New Zealand also noted some of the damage from the quake in Christchurch: a church collapsed, a bridge is impassible, the airport has been shut down and the mayor is urging people not to drive due to road damage.

HuffPost reader Laura Campbell submitted these photos of the damage in Christchurch. A local New Zealand media outlet posted this photo of damage to Chirstchurch's historic Christchurch Cathedral.

Videos of the quake are beginning to surface on YouTube. One video (watch below) shows shaking, presumably an aftershock, and fallen rocks among the damage outside Christchurch.

Further developments in MapleStory Europe's hacking madness

Last week, we brought you the news that players abusing an exploit had brought MapleStory Europe's in-game economy to its knees. Using a packet-forging exploit, players with the Meso Guard skill were able to trick the server into giving them 2.17 billion mesos. Hundreds of mule accounts were created to house the forged currency, and trillions was poured into the economy via trades and market stalls. Nexon EU's initial response was to trade-ban all characters with over a certain amount of currency, a move that was criticised for catching a great deal of legitimate players and also somehow missing many of the hackers' mule accounts.

Despite concerns that the issue had gotten out of hand, Nexon EU stated that the company opted not to perform a server rollback. "The reason why we didn't perform a rollback on our servers," a Nexon EU representative told us, "was because we detected the exploit too late which may make the players lose even more of their gains if we were to turn everything back." The company's final plan for dealing with the massive influx of mesos has finally been announced, and it's bad news for practically everyone involved. After determining that the damage to the economy had become irreversible, Nexon decided to try to bring balance back to the economy by deleting a large percentage of every single player's mesos.

The forums have been in an uproar about the solution, with players complaining that it harms legitimate players more than the hackers. Legitimate players who have never cheated nor hacked will log in to find up to 90% of their hard-earned cash gone. Hackers will suffer the same percentage deduction, but with trillions stashed away in mule accounts they'll still be a lot better off than they were before the incident. Nexon EU clarified the statement in a later announcement, stating that "the deduction of Mesos will only be applied to users who have logged into the game between January 5th, 2011 and February 9th, 2011 5:00 A.M. (GMT+1)." Accounts that were previously trade-banned will also be receiving 1,000 maple points and an incubator as compensation.

Interview: Nexon Announces New Western Initiatives, 2010 Profit Leap

Maple Story expansion is driving Nexon's success in North America as it signs two new games from Western-headquarted studios, one of which will mark its first move into the social networking space.

According to the company, revenues for the fourth quarter of 2010 leapt 42 percent year-on-year -- including a 60 percent increase for December alone -- thanks in large part to an expansion for its popular Maple Story MMO, which drove concurrent players to an all-time high in North America of 136,000.

The South Korean-headquartered company operates Combat Arms, MapleStory, Vindictus, Dungeon Fighter Online, Mabinogi and PopTag! in the North American market out of its Los Angeles office. Its products are all free-to-play with microtransaction support.

"It was a tremendous fourth quarter and year for Nexon and MapleStory's Big Bang [expansion] had a lot to do with it," said Daniel Kim, Nexon America's CEO, in a statement. "Nexon has perfected a formula for gameplay with a business model that attracts players and keeps them loyal."

While the company plans to launch the Korean-developed and already announced MMO Dragon Nest, which has been released in South Korea this year, it has also signed two new as-yet unannounced games spawned from its Nexon iNitiative.

MapleStory: MapleStory Hacked in Europe

It always gets my attention when an MMOG of any significance is hacked. In particular, I find it interesting to see how the incidents are handled. As a result, I've had my eye on MapleStory Europe, where, for the past couple of weeks, Nexon's regional office has been dealing with what looks like a pretty sizable currency exploit.

advertisement

For anyone who may not know what happened, the short version is two of the classes in the game have a skill called Meso Guard that they can employ to lose money instead of health when hit. Someone figured out it was possible to hack the data so as to tell the servers that a character took negative damage, the result of which was a currency gain instead of a loss. What's more, the amount could be as much as 2.1 billion per blow. So, as you can undoubtedly imagine, a lot of players (I haven't seen any credible numbers in this regard) took advantage, thereby shattering the game economy.

While the time frame when this exploit began wasn't immediately known, it was clearly sometime prior to February 1 when a notice was posted on the game's referring to "the recently erupted issue, Meso Exploitation". On that day, it appears Nexon stopped an unspecified number of accounts from trading, although the statement didn't explicitly say so.

The notice did state "we are well aware of the current situation and have compromised it well under." The latter part of this piqued my curiosity since it represented a rather curious choice of words, the meaning of which was unclear. If I were to interpret it with my rose-colored glasses on, I could choose to assume the exploit had pretty much been taken care of. However, it was also possible to put a highly negative spin on it; i.e. to think almost nothing had been done yet.

It struck me as odd that Nexon would use wording that was subject to such a wide range of interpretation, and then, as far as I know, not amend and clarify it in the two weeks since. This left me to guess. Did the company intentionally choose to be so vague? Did I read far too much into part of a sentence written by someone whose native language isn't English? Or was the reality of the situation something else, somewhere in between?

As for resolving this matter, my first thought was to roll back the servers. However, fast forward to February 7. Nexon posted a situation update saying that this option had been considered, but rejected because "considering the amounts of EXP and items that you all have gained throughout the days, we have decided against a roll-back as it may have eventually brought more harm than good to your gameplay." Again, rather vague.

Another day passed before Nexon announced what it had decided to do, which included taking a percentage of mesos away from all accounts regardless of guilt or innocence. Then, on February 9, the company posted another statement that said in part "January 5th was the day when abnormal amounts of Mesos have been tracked for the first time."

The latter date was disappointing to see in a couple of ways. One was obviously that the exploit went undetected for quite some time. While I don't expect MMOGs to be unhackable, I would have thought something like characters suddenly having billions more mesos wouldn't be especially difficult to spot rather than going unnoticed for nearly a full month. Admittedly, this is from someone who knows almost nothing about Internet security. But it appears Nexon fell down on two counts, both preventing the intrusion and identifying it promptly.

On the other side of the coin, I'm also disappointed no one reported the exploit for so long. This is an assumption on my part, but I can't imagine no action being taken sooner if anyone had. A lot of players used it, but I doubt it was everyone. And how likely is it that not a single one even knew about it? So, it seems certain that some people were aware of the hack, didn't take advantage of it themselves, but also didn't bring it to light. It's not the same, but I couldn't help thinking of the bystander effect, the one where a bunch of people witness a crime but no one calls the police.

In addition, while I understand that due to the length of time before Nexon became aware of the issue, it probably wasn't cost-effective to institute a perfect fix since that likely would have required examining who knows how many individual account histories. Still, since I don't have to worry about the company's bottom line, I can be and am less than fully satisfied with its decision not to bite the bullet.

Coach Suspended For Attacking Student

Holy Family University Coach John O'Connor was suspended for allegedly elbowing one of his players and hitting him with the back of his hand. Philadelphia Police were notified of the incident and the University won't comment until the investigation is completed. O'Connor was suspended Thursday for the alleged attack on 19-year-old student Mark Kravchuk. The alleged attack occurred on January 25th and Kravchuk filed a complaint that same day. Kravchuck then filed a complaint with police February 11th when he didn’t feel like the university was taking the incident seriously enough.

Presidents Day Bank Holiday 2011: Some Banks Choose to Remain Open

Although Presidents Day is considered to be a Federal Holiday, there are some institutions that have chosen to stay open this Monday, February 21, 2011.

The U.S Office of Personnel Management titles the holiday as Washington’s Birthday saying, “This holiday is designated as “Washington’s Birthday” in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees. Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.”

Whether you call it Washington’s Birthday or Presidents Day doesn’t matter, most Americans are more concerned about whether they have it off or not. For those lucky enough to have a day off you may want to check out if your bank is open or closed. Some institutions have decided to forego the day off and provide their services to customers.

Presidents' Day is Monday, February 21. It's the holiday set aside to celebrate the birthdays of two of our greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. As a holiday from daily life, though, it doesn't do much for most folks, unless you work for the government, the library, or the banks. Most of those places will be closed on Monday. You also get a day off if you are a student in the Washoe County School District. Reno recreation facilities will be shut down as well, with the only exception being the Northwest Pool. Australia vs Zimbabwe (AUS vs. ZIM) ICC World Cup Live Cricket Score.

Australia won the toss against Zimbabwe and chose to bat. Australia made a surprisingly slow start, with Haddin at one stage making just 16 runs off 41 balls.

Australia start their campaign for a fifth ICC Cricket World Cup trophy with a tricky opener against Zimbabwe on Monday.

Australia have been unbeaten in 22 matches in the last two tournaments played in South Africa (2003) and West Indies (2007), under Ricky Ponting.

They have won 23 back to back matches stretching to 1999 and have been unconquered in 29 ties, which includes the unforgettable tied match against South Africa in the semifinal 12 years ago.

On paper, Ponting's men hold a clear edge over the African nation led by Elton Chigumbara, but would be eager not to be tripped by the one-time minnows of the 50-over game as was the case 28 years ago in England.

The Aussies, fresh from a 6-1 rout of their Ashes nemesis England in the following ODI series at home, landed in India only to be rudely awakened by successive defeats in their two practice games against India and South Africa at Bangalore.

But they are sure to hit the strap on the run when their bid to clinch their fifth World Cup crown starts.

The Aussies have a fine batting line-up in which Shane Watson, who opens the batting, and Ponting are crucial in the top order to lay the platform for others to build upon.

President Obama on Letterman: I Was Black Before The Election (VIDEO)

President Barack Obama appeared on David Letterman last night and talked about everything from his family to health care reform. And Obama showed off his keen sense of humor and comic timing, as seen in this clip when Dave asked him about Jimmy Carter’s theory that the recent vitriol and hatred directed towards him in many town hall meetings and debates is fueled by racism. “It’s important to realize that I was actually black before the election,” Obama deadpanned, drawing a huge laugh from the crowd and leaving Dave in hysterics. See the video after the jump.

Obama spoke warmly about daughters Sasha and Malia and their summer vacation, saying they “bascially just goofed off during the summer, which I couldn’t do.”

“Others have,” Letterman cracked.

When asked about the effect that being the President’s daughters has had on them, Obama said he was more worried about the girls in their teen years. “I suppose they are going to want to go on dates,” he said, “and I’ll have all these men with guns around. At that point they may have some stress.”

Female comics becoming a force to be reckoned with

Being a female comic is no joke.

"It is an aggressive, masculine business," says Linda Mizejewski, a professor of women's studies at Ohio State University.

About 80 percent of all comics are men, Mizejewski notes, but female comics are becoming more mainstream.

Mizejewski will talk about the rise of female comedians at the 2011 Friends of Women's Studies Annual Dinner at Old Dominion University on Feb. 28.

Mizejewski said that the industry long was resistant to funny women, but that belief has been turned upside down by the success of Joan Rivers, Tina Fey, Wanda Sykes, Ellen DeGeneres and others.

Mizejewski, who taught at ODU in the late 1970s, is writing a book about female comics. She argues that the ascent of women in comedy is a framework for understanding how ideas about women and their roles have changed in society.

Comedy is an arena where traditional ideas about how women should look, act and behave have been challenged.

While women in show business are expected to be attractive, Mizejewski said that good looks aren't always an advantage for those trying to make others laugh.
