The NRMP Main Residency Match

Each spring, thousands of medical students across the United States render their fate into one of the most bewildering processes of higher education: the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The program was developed in 1952 as a means to “relieve the pressure and inequity of free market recruitment, and to establish a uniform playing field with educational boundaries” with regards to residency training programs. Prior to this, the process of achieving a desirable residency spot was fraught with chaos, with multiple different application forms and processes, not to mention false promises and false information.

Conceptually, the matching procedure seems straightforward: assign medical students to residency programs in a way that streamlines the process and produces the best outcomes for all parties involved. Practically, however, it’s a bit more complicated.

Comment on the proposed NRMP scramble following the resident match

The NRMP website asked for comments on the NRMP's new plan for organizing the post-match scramble, and some of my young colleagues and I were moved to send one in:

Comment on the NRMP’s “Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program” Proposed to Replace the Post-Match Scramble by Peter A. Coles, Clayton R. Featherstone, John William Hatfield, Fuhito Kojima, Scott Duke Kominers, Muriel Niederle, Parag A. Pathak, and Alvin E. Roth.

Executive Summary: "Historical precedent and economic principles suggest that the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) proposed for the NRMP Scramble will lead to unsatisfactory outcomes by forcing participants to make unnecessarily difficult decisions and giving them strong incentives to break the rules laid out in the SOAP proposal. We suggest, as an alternative Scramble mechanism, that the NRMP run a “Second Match” for the Scramble participants using rules similar to those of the Main Match."

2011 NFL Combine: Which Quarterbacks Will Throw?

Pro Football Talk had a list yesterday of the first and second day quarterback prospects and whether or not they will throw at the NFL Combine. According to PFT, Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick, Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, Andy Dalton, Ricky Stanzi and Christian Ponder will all throw at the combine. Greg McElroy, who I don't see being a first or second day prospect, will not throw due to an injury he sustained at the combine.

Blaine Gabbert is the only one of this group who has chosen not to throw at the combine. Ponder was apparently on the fence, but PFT update their story late last night saying that he had decided to throw. I don't really understand why Gabbert won't throw, but that has been his stance pretty much since he declared. That means that the only time pro coaches and scouts will get to see him throw is at his Pro Day.

2011 NFL Combine: Will The Chiefs Be Checking Out Any Quarterbacks?

After figuring out who ran the fastest, jumped the highest and lifted the most weight, the next question on folks' minds with the NFL Combine is how the quarterbacks did. The Kansas City Chiefs aren't in the market for a first round quarterback but, with the Chiefs backup quarterback situation, I think I'd be surprised if they didn't take a quarterback at some point in the draft.

Star-divide
If they are planning on taking a mid-round-or-later quarterback, they'll get a chance to see a few of them at the NFL Combine. Right now, there's just one quarterback that's not expected to throw at the NFL Combine (with the exception of Greg McElroy, who is hurt).

Expected to throw: Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick, Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, Andy Dalton, Ricky Stanzi and Christian Ponder

Not expected to throw: Blaine Gabbert

Most of these players will be selected in the first couple of rounds but a couple of the guys, like Dalton and Stanzi, may be available in the middle rounds.

Quarterback certainly isn't a need this second but QB Brodie Croyle isn't under contract for 2011 and, if he doesn't come back, the Chiefs will need another young arm waiting in the wings.

Why Is Dana Carvey Hosting Saturday Night Live This Week?

Whoa time warp! Dana Carvey and Mike Myers were back in the basement at Waynes’ World tonight. Then Dana was yucking it up with John Lovitz in the Saturday Night Live monologue. No you haven’t entered a weird time warp and been transported back to the early 90′s, Dana Carvey is hosting the very show that made him famous.

Why is Dana Carvey hosting Saturday Night Live this week?

There really is no apparent reason that Dana Carvey is hosting Saturday Night Live this week. He’s not hyping a new movie although his first movie since 2002 may or may not come out sometime this year. He doens’t have a new television show in the works having already tried the tv route with the 1996 flop The Dana Carvey Show.

Nope Dana Carvey is not using Saturday Night Live to promote anything other than the glory years of SNL. In the first few minutes he’s already brought out Garth from Wayne’s World and The Church Lady giving me a flashback to those glory college years. So basically he’s only on board at SNL to remind us how great the show used to be!

ICC CWC LIVE: PAK vs KEN: Pakistan are in trouble having lost openers Hafeez and Shehzad. Kenya on fire. Elijah Otieno and Thomas Odoyo are on the ball. Click through for LIVE STREAMING!

The Toss

Pakistan have won the toss and elected to bat first against Kenya in their ICC Cricket World Cup tie on Wednesday.

Match Preview

Having suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Ireland, which eventually resulted in their first exit from the ICC CWC's 2007 edition, Pakistan will be wary of taking their opponents lightly this time around.

In fact, captain Shahid Afridi has already warned his team to take every opponent seriously.

"There have been so many upsets in the World Cup in the past, like the one against Ireland four years ago. So we have that in mind and we will be on our toes in every match, be it Kenya or Sri Lanka," said Afridi.

Going into the match, Pakistan will take heart from their recent 3-2 one-day series victory over New Zealand in New Zealand just before the ICC CWC..

And even though they had mixed fortunes in their two warm-up games -- a win against Bangladesh and a defeat against England, Pakistan are well aware that if they play as a unit, they have enough firepower to go a long way in the tournament.

Pakistan's batting consisting of the likes of Mohammad Hafeez, former captain Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Akmal brothers -- Kamran and Umar, has the reputation of creating quite a flutter in the opposition camp.

In the absence of their banned opener Salman Butt, Pakistan will be banking on Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad in the opening slot, followed by the more experienced middle-order.

Veteran Younis Khan is expected to bring in stability with all his experience of playing international cricket, followed by Test skipper and in-form Misbah and the two Akmals.
