Band Of Joy Robert Plant

The 'if I enjoy it, then the audience will too' gambit isn't 100 percent fail-safe, but it seems to work for Plant. Resisting, once again, a world tour with Led Zeppelin, he has instead followed his heart to Nashville with co-producer and tremolo guitar whizz Buddy Miller. Working with multi-instrumentalist Darrell Scott (banjo pecks, jinking mandolin etc.) among others, the pair cut 12 eclectically sourced cover versions in ten days. Country chanteuse Patty Griffin is clearly this record's Alison Krauss; a perfect foil as Plant taps the more sensual stations of his range. The tender, propulsive take on the late Townes Van Zandt's Harm's Swift Way is a nice touch, and atmospheric readings of Low's Silver Rider and Monkey should spark pots of royalties for everyone's favourite Mormon slowcore band. It all adds up to more wilful magic from Plant.

Mubarak unmoved by pressure

The so-called `day of departure' didn't turn out that way for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, but the United States and demonstrators kept up the pressure for him to resign.
BY SHASHANK BENGALI AND HANNAH ALLAM
McClatchy News Service

CAIRO -- The protesters called it his ``day of departure,'' but Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak showed no overt sign of resigning Friday despite the hundreds of thousands who gathered in Tahrir Square for the 11th straight day to call for his removal.

Amid a beefed-up Egyptian army presence and few major clashes -- unlike the previous days -- the demonstrators called for three more days of mass anti-Mubarak rallies next week. The mood was upbeat at the square, where chants and nationalist songs echoed until well after nightfall from a huge, diverse crowd.

Young women in headscarves mingled with retirees walking with canes, pious Muslims with prayer marks on their foreheads and young men with bandaged heads wounded in the week's fighting.

A few hundred Mubarak supporters collected on the outskirts of the square in what the regime called a ``day of loyalty,'' and some engaged in rock-throwing skirmishes with the demonstrators. But they never challenged the anti-government group's hold on the square as they did earlier this week in fighting that killed at least 11 people and injured more than 1,000.

President Barack Obama again called on Mubarak for a prompt transition to a new government after nearly three decades of rule. He said he had told him in two phone calls since the crisis began that ``going back to the old ways is not going to work'' and urged him to leave ``a legacy behind in which Egypt is able to get through this transformative period.''

``My understanding is that some discussions have begun'' between the Egyptian government and the opposition, Obama said. However, U.S. officials described the talks Thursday between Vice President Omar Suleiman and some opponents, overshadowed by the violence a day earlier, as unfruitful.

Another session may take place Saturday, with White House encouragement. The Americans are seeking more than ``an empty gesture of dialogue,'' said a U.S. official who wasn't authorized to speak publicly. ``Everyone is wrestling about how to get there.''

On the Steelers: Hampton 'not coming out'

DALLAS -- University of Texas graduate Casey Hampton does not plan to take a back seat in this Texas Super Bowl and, by all measures, that would be a rather large back seat.

The 340-poundish Hampton knows the Steelers defense will deploy plenty of nickel and dime schemes against the pass-happy Green Bay Packers. And, in such defenses, Hampton usually is nowhere to be found.

He promised that will change Sunday.

"I'm playing in every package -- nickel, dime, everything," Hampton declared. "I'm not coming out. I'm starting everything, so I'm out there."

During the usual course of events, when the Steelers switch to their nickel defense (simply put for this exercise, five defensive backs) or dime (six defensive backs), Hampton comes off the field. Coordinator Dick LeBeau will insert a fifth defensive back in passing situations or against an offense that employs three or more receivers.

The nickel back this season has been William Gay, who replaces Hampton. The Steelers then would use two interior linemen -- Ziggy Hood and Brett Keisel, usually -- and two "ends" or outside linebackers, LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison.

Before they drafted linebacker Lawrence Timmons, the Steelers usually used six defensive backs in passing situations, adding two in the secondary and removing Hampton and a linebacker (e.g. Larry Foote). They may use more dime this game because the Packers like to use sets that feature four and five receivers.

But Hampton vows to remain on the field in all those defenses, although not all of the time.

"I mean, it's time, the Super Bowl is time to go. It's just time. There's no reason for me to be sitting on the bench and playing 15 plays and stuff like that. I don't have nothing to save it for, it's time to go."

If that's the case, it would be time to go for Hood (or Keisel, but his experience and ability suit the pass defense better) unless LeBeau plans to use a 12-man defense.

"Oh, Ziggy is going to play,'' Hampton insisted, because "after about three, four plays I'm going to be tired anyway. So, he's going to have to go in."

Hampton followed that quickly with a belly laugh, and you have to see the belly to appreciate the laugh.

"It's going to be like a better rotation, more of a mix of both of us in there," Hampton said. "We're just going to try to rotate more, especially if they're passing the ball a whole lot. Just rotate guys more."

Hampton does not like to come out of games, but it is something the Steelers have done with him for a long time. On occasion, smart offenses have been able to take advantage of his absence by showing a pass formation to get him off the field, then giving the ball to their third-down back to run.

The family of Brooke Wilberger's

The family of Brooke Wilberger's killer is breaking their silence for the first time, opening up, about how they pieced together that their brother, Joel Courtney, was a murderer.

Courtney raped and killed the 19-year-old Oregon girl in May 2004. The most publicized murder in Oregon history was the focus of the latest Dateline.

Courtney's sister Dina recalled when her brother disappeared, during which time he abducted and killed Wilberger. He came back with a wild story.

"He walked through the door and announced kind of loudly, you'll never believe where I've been, " said sister Dina Courtney McBride. "I said okay, where were you? I was kidnapped, (he said). There were these guys. They had guns and knives and we were in the woods. It was rainy and cold and there was a girl there and we were hiding. And y'know there was blood and it was awful."

Meanwhile, Brooke Wilberger's family was frantic, trying to find her. "I said, where's Brooke?." said Cammy Wilberger, Brooke's mother.

"And he (her son) said what do you mean? You don't know? He goes, 'we don't know where she is.' I said 'Spence, don't tease me. What are you talking about?' And he said, 'no seriously mom. We can't find her and right then I had a chill go through my whole body.'"

Joel Courtney refused to speak with investigators, regarding the Wilberger disappearance. But Dina remembered when her mother visited him in jail and asked him, once and for all.

"Joel, did you do this?, " said Courtney McBride's mother, "and he

A beautiful girl Brooke Wilberger who tragically lost her life to the hands of a man named Joel Courtney.

Brooke Wilberger was a beautiful girl who tragically lost her life to the hands of a man named Joel Courtney. Dateline aired Brooke Wilberger’s story tonight, and perhaps the most incredible part of the story is the fact that Brooke Wilberger’s mother was able to thank Joel Courtney for finally revealing where Brooke’s body was located after he took her life.

Brooke Wilberger was abducted from an apartment complex by Joel Courtney. He lured her to his car by asking her for help moving a package, but when she approached him, he held a knife to her and told her to get into the car. Sadly, Brooke’s life ended in a wooded area about 10 miles away from where she was taken.

In the ultimate fight for justice, Brooke’s mother and siblings made a deal with Joel Courtney. He was given life in prison in New Mexico in exchange for revealing where Brooke’s remains were located.

During a press conference after his conviction, Brooke Wilberger’s mother expressed gratitude towards Joel Courtney for finally bringing closure to her family on what happened to Brooke.

As a mother, I’m not sure that I could have shown the same act of compassion.

Puppy Bowl VII:Super Bowl 2011’s Hairy Underbelly

We’re coming up on Super Bowl Sunday, and I have to admit I’ve never been much of a football fan (read: most women in fact are fans). I do, however, enjoy the Super Bowl for its quintessential American traditions. A gathering of friends. Time-tested chili and nacho recipes. The unveiling of big-budget ads.

For these reasons I was amused and, yes, even pleased to learn that another, under-hyped tradition will be making women smile this year. That’s right, Animal Planet’s annual Puppy Bowl–an extravaganza of canine athletics and clucking chicken cheerleaders–enjoys a mostly female audience. Women were 60% of viewers for last year’s special, which pulled a record 8.6 million audience, according to the cable channel owned by Discovery.

This year, the furry fun is back, airing at 3 o’clock on Feb. 6 before the top of the food chain takes the field. From the clips I’ve seen so far, be warned: it is extremely cute. Perhaps women are suckers for the adorable, or maybe its long-time executive producer Melinda Toporoff knows her audience. Either way, I’ll be tuning in for some pre-game paws and awws this Sunday.

Pennsylvania boy Nadin Khoury Video

Nadin Khoury Video, Nadin Khoury, the Pennsylvania boy who was brutally assaulted by a pack of young boys last month, a special surprise Thursday when he appeared on ABC, The View. Khoury, 13, came home from school on Jan. 11 when he was randomly beaten, dragged through the streets, put in a tree, then suspended by his coat on a metal fence high seven classmates. The incident was captured on video by one of the assailants, who pushed the story in the national spotlight.

“I watched the tape, and I just broke down. … It’s just something that no parent wants to see, “the boy’s mother, Rebecca Wright, recalled on the morning show.

After discussing how the incident had affected Khoury was shocked when the ladies of The View took out his favorite player in the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles star DeSean Jackson, who was joined by teammates Todd Herremans and Jamaal Jackson.

“Whenever you never need us, I have two linemen here … my boys are ready to go, “said the catcher, who gave a swimsuit Khoury Eagles and was offered tickets to any game next season.

Zap2it's top 5 picks in the Puppy Bowl 2011 starting lineup

The 2011 Super Bowl is almost upon us. And with it, we also get the seventh (can you believe it?) incarnation of Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl -- that adorable distraction for the non-sporting and those weary of overproduced halftime shows.

Airing Feb. 6 at 3:00 p.m. ET, and repeating several times afterward, PBVII has 34 dogs on the field and waiting in on the sidelines.

But who's poised for success and the prized title of "Most Valuable Puppy?" We've taken all of their stats into consideration and come up with the five most athletically viable canines (read: we looked at pictures of puppies and randomly selected our favorites). Here's how they stack up:

amy-320-puppy-bowl.jpg5. Amy

Breed: Golden Retriever/Corgi mix; Age: 18-weeks

Part Golden Retriever, this little gal has athleticism in her blood. But genetics could also be her downfall. There's a fair amount of Corgi in there too, and we all know the royal sense of entitlement they tend to carry. At the very least, she has size and age on her side.

Mom Claims Hotel Pool Impregnated Her Daughter

When in Egypt, most would make a trek to check out ‘da Nile. But one visiting mom made a full blown trip to the land of ‘denial’ instead. Magdalena Kwiatkowska, the mother of a thirteen-year-old girl claims that an innocent swim at the hotel pool of an Egyptian hotel resulted in her daughter becoming pregnant. The Polish resident is “adamant that her daughter didn’t meet any boys while she was there,” and that the teen was inseminated when swimming in the coed pool. She is now asking for the hotel to pony up for having their pool knock up her daughter.

Do you think there is any way for the mom to try to prove this theory?

Wear Red Day 2011: Teaching Girls to be Heart Smart

Wearing red in February isn’t just reserved for Valentine’s Day anymore.

The next time you help your daughter pick out her clothes, be sure to pull something red out of her closet. Today is National Wear Red Day, which is intended to raise awareness of heart disease and women, and it’s never too soon to teach your little ones about the importance of being heart healthy.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, although heart attacks are generally thought to be a “man thing.” One in four women will die of heart disease, compared to one in 30 who will die from breast cancer. In fact, more women die of heart disease than from all types of cancer combined.

Heart disease is brought on when arteries in the heart become blocked, preventing oxygen and other vital nutrients from traveling to the heart. Once diagnosed, it will remain for life. While mostly middle-aged women are affected, heart disease can strike teenagers as well. African Americans and Hispanics are also more prone to heart disease, as are those with high blood pressure and cholesterol. Overweight people and smokers face increased risks, too.

Kim Kardashian Loves 'W Magazine' Nude Photos

Forget the tears -- Kim Kardashian now loves her nude W Magazine photos.

Kardashian, whose W Magazine nude photos hit newsstands in October, reacted with an onslaught of tears when she first got her hands on the magazine, a scene depicted in the most recent episode of 'Kourtney and Kim Take New York.' Now, she says skin is in.

"Looking back, I love the photos," she told Us Magazine on Thursday. "W Magazine is iconic so I'm really happy that I did it and that those are the photos."

That wasn't quite how she reacted on the show.

"Oh my God, I'm more naked that I was in Playboy," Kim told her sisters on the show. "I'm so mad right now. [The magazine] promised I would be covered with artwork -- you can see the nipples!"

The tears, she told Us, came because even though she wasn't wearing any clothing when the cameras took the photos, she wasn't expecting nude shots.

"Looking back, that was my initial reaction when I saw the pictures and I was just really upset. I do think the pictures are beautiful."
