Hot & Sexy Screen Legend Jane Russell Dies at 89

Sexy screen legend Jane Russell passed away in Santa Maria, Calif. of respiratory failure at the age of 89 on Monday, her family told the Associated Press.

Known for her voluptuous hourglass figure, the brunette beauty became a pinup queen and movie star in the mold of Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and other icons -- but managed to avoid any major upheaval or scandal in her personal life.

Russell's vampy breakout role was in the 1943 Western The Outlaw, directed by eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. WWI soldiers were huge fans of the busty brunette, who wore low-cut costumes and swimsuits in countless photos.

Other Russell hits included comedy-western The Paleface (1948) with Bob Hope, Double Dynamite with Frank Sinatra, and Gentleman Prefer Blondes, a musical in which she went toe-to-toe (and sang) with Monroe. (Russell also starred in 1955 sequel, Gentlemen Marry Brunettes, without the world-famous blond).

Jane Russell Passes Away at 89

She was probably best known for her role in “The Outlaw” back in 1941, and Jane Russell has passed away at the age of 89.

The Hollywood icon suffered from respiratory failure and died in her Santa Maria home yesterday (February 28).

Her daughter-in-law Etta Waterfield told press, “She always said I’m going to die in the saddle, I’m not going to sit at home and become an old woman. And that’s exactly what she did, she died in the saddle.”

Ms. Russell had quite the body of work, including a part opposite Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 musical “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” Jane and Marilyn sang a duet called “Two Little Girls from Little Rock” as they sought romance in Paris, France.

Jane was married three times, with her most recent husband John Peoples succumbing to heart failure back in 1999. Russell told press, “Without faith, I never would have made it.”
